Across the Wellington Region, we spend plenty of time talking about plans, systems and response arrangements – but at the heart of emergency management are the people who make it all happen.

The 2026 Australasian Women in Emergencies Network (AWE) Recognition Awards celebrate the people turning great ideas into real-world impact and helping shape the future of our sector. This year’s recipients showcase the incredible talent, leadership and innovation happening on both sides of the Tasman.

A huge congratulations to Jessica Hare, who received the AWE Recognition Award for Emergency Management and Disaster Resilience Practice. Jess was recognised for her leadership in developing the Wellington CDEM Group’s first 10-year Strategy and supporting Group Plan, helping set the direction for the region’s future resilience.

Jennifer Rizzi received the AWE Recognition Award for Outstanding Contribution to Advancing Gender Equity and Mentoring, acknowledging her unwavering commitment to supporting, mentoring and championing others across the emergency management sector.

Monique Vincent was also recognised with the AWE Recognition Award for Emergency Management and Disaster Resilience Practice. Through her kindness, empathy and determination, Monique has strengthened Wellington City Council’s EOC Intelligence capability, embedded emergency management training into staff onboarding, and is often one of the very first to put her hand up when help is needed.

And congratulations to Lauren Coe from Hutt City Council, who was awarded for Research, Policy and Innovation for developing the EOCC (Emergency Operations Centre Cockpit) alongside her day job. Bringing councils’ plans, checklists and response information together in one place during activations, the EOCC is already generating significant interest across the sector.
