MetService New Zealand has issued a Red Strong Wind Warning for Wellington City, the Hutt Valley and Porirua.

MetService New Zealand has issued a Red Strong Wind Warning for Wellington City, the Hutt Valley and Porirua.

This warning is in place from 10:00am today (Thursday 1 May) until 3:00am tomorrow (Friday 2 May).

Severe gale southwesterlies with gusts of 140 km/h peaking this afternoon, especially about the South Coast of Wellington City and exposed hilltops.

Winds are expected to pick up from now and peaking at 1pm.

We are advising people to stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel.

If you need to travel this afternoon/evening, plan ahead as strong winds can make driving hazardous.

Safety Advice

• Take special care on coastal roads as there may be debris.
• Severe wind gusts like these can damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures and can cause threat to life from flying items and falling trees.
• Destructive winds can cause widespread damage including powerlines and roofs, with dangerous driving conditions and significant disruption to transport and power supply.
• Be ready for possible power and communication outages.
• Secure any outdoor items if safe to do so, like wheelie bins, trampolines and outdoor furniture that may blow around.
